Metacognition and Executive Function: Practical Tools for Motivating Students and Reducing Stress in the Classroom

Presented by: Lynn Meltzer, Ph.D.

The recent challenges of implementing online and hybrid models of learning have highlighted the critical importance of teaching students strategies for goal-setting, organizing, prioritizing, thinking flexibly, memorizing, and self-monitoring. These executive function strategies affect students’ performance in most academic areas and are the foundation for improved school performance, growth mindsets, reduced stress, and resilience during classroom and remote learning.

This presentation will provide an overview of executive function and metacognition and will focus on the what, why, how of teaching executive function across the grades and content areas. Attendees will learn practical strategies for promoting metacognitive awareness, flexible thinking, and executive function as part of the classroom curriculum.

We will end with a discussion of the connections between students’ use of executive function strategies and their self-concept, persistence, and resilience. We will also focus on strategies for empowering students to learn HOW to learn so we can reduce students’ stress and promote their academic success in school and in life.
