Executive Function and Social Emotional Learning: Strategies to Promote Perspective Taking, Goal Setting, Flexible Thinking

Presented by: Michael Greschler, M.Ed.

Students who struggle with stress, anxiety, fear and depression often struggle in school. They may only be able to put in minimal effort or cling to inefficient strategies, prey to exaggerated fears and worries about their abilities. When students struggle with executive function, they are unable or unwilling to work independently, giving up when frustrated. In this training, attendees will explore the relationship between emotion and executive function strategies, as well as how to use EF strategies as a way to promote emotional regulation. We will develop a more nuanced appreciation for the impact of negative emotions on students’ performance, and, through hands-on activities, we will learn to teach executive function strategies in a way that addresses engagement and motivation, empowering students to be more independent and successful.
