I like CANDO* goals, and I use them pretty much every day. With CANDO goals you have to think of alternate ways to achieve your goal if an obstacle happens, which is great. —Luke, high school student
Goal setting is a challenging yet crucial aspect of executive function. Left to their own devices, students may set unrealistic goals or may crumple at the first sign of failure. However, helping them anticipate obstacles and potential solutions increases the likelihood that they will persevere in the face of challenge and continue their quest to achieve goals that are personally meaningful to them.
*CANDO goals are Clear, Appropriate, Numerical, Doable, and with Obstacles considered. To learn more about CANDO goals and other SMARTS goal-setting strategies, see the Goal Setting unit overview.
