Memory Strategies for Students with ADHD

Memory Strategies for Students with ADHD

Hey everyone! Elizabeth Ross here. (Some of you might recognize me from our curriculum videos!) Anyway, I’m really excited to be connecting with all of you through the new SMARTS Online blog. As part of our work for SMARTS, we read A LOT about executive function, metacognition, differentiated education, ADHD, dyslexia, working memory, curriculum design, etc. We scour the internet for the best research, news, commentary, and recommendations. When we come across something really interesting, we’re going to use this space to share it with you. We want to create a place where we can have a great dialog with all of you about issues in education.

So to kick this off, I wanted to share with you a great article on additudemag.com:

6 Memory Tricks for ADHD Students. The folks over there make some great points about different memory strategies. From the article:

Children with ADHD and learning disabilities often have trouble remembering and retaining information taught in class. To improve their memory skills, help them create links and visual, auditory, and conceptual associations between bits of information.1322

This is terrific advice! Then the article goes on to list some great memory strategies.I like this article because it gives a great introduction to some of the memory strategies that we use in SMARTS Online in Unit 5 of our curriculum. Check this unit out if you’re looking for a brief overview of memory strategies for students with ADHD, or really any student who could use a little memory help. (Honestly, I don’t know about you, but I could always use little memory help even now, and these are some nice strategies.)
