Bridging the Gap: Executive Function and Social Emotional Learning

Bridging the Gap: Executive Function and Social Emotional Learning

How can we foster students’ strengths, independent learning, resilience, and self-confidence? It’s a complex question that will begin to be addressed at the 37th Annual Executive Function Conference. This conference will highlight the close connections between executive function and social-emotional learning and the importance of examining these processes for students from K-12 to college.

Live Panels

We are honored to be hosting three live panels of educators, researchers, and clinicians who will emphasize the application of theory and research to educational practice. These panels will focus on leveraging executive function and social-emotional learning to foster students’ strengths and build resilience.

The panel discussions will cover the themes of executive function, emotion, anxiety, and stress in the context of research, clinical practice, and teaching. The following speakers will be featured: Anthony Bashir, Ph.D., CCC-SLP; Michael Greschler, M.Ed.; Suellen Inwood, M.S.; Shelly Levy, M.Ed., M.S.; Colin Meltzer, M.A.; Mindy Scirri, Ph.D.; Tessa Zimmerman, B.S.; Rebecca Baelen, Ph.D.; Susannah Cole, M.Ed.; Julie Dunstan, Ph.D.; Donna Kincaid, M.Ed.; Joan Steinberg, M.Ed.; and Dot Lucci, M.Ed., C.A.G.S.

The educator panel will highlight the voices of SMARTS teachers who are implementing an in-depth schoolwide approach to executive function strategies and support. Educators will also describe how they help students see the value in executive function strategies by tying it in closely with students’ goals and identity formation.

These experts will draw on their decades of experience as they address such questions as:

  • How do executive function and social-emotional processes interact to affect classroom learning?
  • How can we create schools and classrooms that promote executive function and social-emotional learning in all students?
  • How do we promote flexible thinking and resilience so that we reduce students’ stress in school?
  • How can executive function and social-emotional strategies prepare students for academic and lifelong success?
